Sokunthea walks through Damreychannkla commune in Cambodia. Living with five other CHRA staff, she serves to advance life-giving knowledge about AIDS to local churches and communities. She walks up the stairs of the CHRA compound in the middle of a downpour, carrying piles of papers to the second level to makes sure they aren’t damaged in the midst of pouring rains and flooding.
In a country plagued by poverty and genocide in the recent history, Cambodia also faces a growing number of people infected by HIV/AIDS. Working to educate and inform people to make wise decisions and live healthy, God-honoring lives, Sokunthea informs the local church about the truth about AIDS prevention and care.
Sokunthea travels to Brasath Sambo District—a thirty kilometer drive. She walks among the neighborhoods, doing surveys throughout the district. Sokunthea works with farmers struggling to survive as they work infertile soil in the midst of drought. She works in the midst of churches on fire for God, striving to spread the news of Christ. Sokunthea empowers the church to respond to the problem of AIDS in their communities by educating them how to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and by sharing with them ways to reach out to those living with the disease.
Traveling on dirt roads that turn to mud in the rainy season cab be dangerous. Sokunthea rides her motorbike across the district to visit villagers and offer training and support. Once, while traveling through high waters, Sokunthea’s motorbike stalled and tipped over. She was rescued by a colleague later in the day.
Sokunthea serves graciously as she shares her life in the villages, walking from house to house taking information for surveys, sharing information with families and individuals and offering the hope of Christ to entire communities.
